Welcome to the atq (at queenstown) blogger page. I am hoping to use this page in conjunction with some of my others to link to videos and other material. On the righthand side you will see a series of links to Google videos. When you open them they will appear at the top of this page so make sure you scroll back up to see them!
I recently gave my thoughts about the "future of computers in education" to a Lead Teachers seminar in our cluster. Below I will try to reproduce that powerpoint presentation in blog form with the links to the original web-videos instead of the edited versions I had within powerpoint.

The Future of Computing - Pen Based Pt 2

Handwriting recognition provides a power tool for accessing computers, but a more interesting an important development is the translation of the pen into a truly portable device. Used in conjunction with a data projector the pen can be physically located to write on any surface, not just a tablet or a whiteboard. With the image projected on a convenient surface the movement of the pen can be calibrated and mapped to the image to permit full computer use anywhere.
Check out the Portable Pen Computing video on the right. This shows a large projector sitting on its back projecting onto the table with the aid of a mirror. Cumbersome but they also show a small projector prototype as well.
However, the true synthesis comes when this pen technology gets married with the cellphone laser projector due to be release in 2008. For information on this tiny laser projector that is predicted to cost only tens of dollars! Have a look at the Miniature Data Projector video.
